Ahrefs AI Agent: Ahrefs Pricing, API Costs and What an SEO Agent Really Adds

TL;DR. Ahrefs list prices on 9 October 2026: Lite $129 a month ($1,290 a year), Standard $249 ($2,490 a year), Advanced $449 ($4,490 a year) and Enterprise $1,499 a month on an annual commitment, plus a $29 Starter plan and a free tier for sites you own. API and MCP access now start on Lite, and every API request costs at least 50 units. An Ahrefs subscription gives you data; it does not do the work the data points to. This guide explains what an “Ahrefs AI agent” means in practice, what each Ahrefs route costs, three worked cost scenarios with every assumption stated, and where a browser-based agent such as Katteb saves money, where it only adds cost, and where you should not use one at all.

Most people who type “Ahrefs pricing” into Google already know what Ahrefs is. They are deciding whether the plan they are looking at is worth it, which tier they need, or whether there is a cheaper way to get the same result. That last question is the interesting one, because the result people want is rarely “a backlink report”. It is more traffic, fixed pages, new links, a weekly update the client can read. The report is just the start of that work.

This is where AI agents enter the conversation. Ahrefs has opened its API and an MCP server to every paid plan, so an AI assistant can now ask Ahrefs questions directly. At the same time, browser-based agents can open your Ahrefs account, Google Search Console and your CMS the way you would, read what is there, and then act on it. Both are sometimes called an “Ahrefs AI agent”. They are not the same thing, and they are not priced the same way.

What is an Ahrefs AI agent?

An Ahrefs AI agent is software that uses Ahrefs data to complete an SEO job with little or no manual clicking. In October 2026 there are three common shapes:

  • An assistant connected through Ahrefs MCP. You ask a chat assistant a question such as “which of my pages lost referring domains this month?” and it pulls the answer from Ahrefs. It answers; it does not usually go and fix the page.
  • A script or workflow on the Ahrefs API. A developer writes code that calls the API on a schedule, stores the rows and sends a report. It is precise and repeatable, but every new question means new code, and every call consumes units.
  • A goal-driven browser agent. An agent such as Katteb runs in a real browser signed in as you. It can read Ahrefs reports in your account, check Search Console, open WordPress, update a meta description, draft an outreach email, and report what it did. It works toward an outcome you describe rather than answering one question.

The right choice depends on whether your bottleneck is getting the data or doing something with it.

What does Ahrefs cost in October 2026?

These are the list prices shown on ahrefs.com/pricing on 9 October 2026, in US dollars, before tax, for one user.

Plan Monthly billing Annual billing What stands out
Ahrefs Free $0 $0 Limited Site Explorer and Site Audit for sites you verify you own
Starter $29 / mo n/a shown Keyword and competitor look-ups for beginners
Lite $129 / mo $1,290 / yr ($108 / mo) 5 projects, 6 months of history, 750 tracked keywords, 1,000 report credits per user, API and MCP access
Standard $249 / mo $2,490 / yr ($208 / mo) 20 projects, 2 years of history, 2,000 tracked keywords, unlimited credits, Content Explorer, Batch Analysis
Advanced $449 / mo $4,490 / yr ($374 / mo) 50 projects, 5 years of history, 5,000 tracked keywords, Looker Studio integration
Enterprise $1,499 / mo Annual commitment required Uncapped API access, custom endpoints, SSO, audit log, unlimited history

Extra users cost $40 a month on Lite (up to 2), $60 on Standard (up to 5), $80 on Advanced (up to 10) and $100 on Enterprise. Ahrefs states on the same page that it never runs discounts, and that pay-as-you-go items such as extra users, credits and API units are charged automatically when you go over a limit you have enabled. Optional add-ons include Content Kit from $99 a month, Report Builder at $99 a month and Brand Radar AI from $199 a month.

The annual price saves 17% on each paid tier. For Lite that is $1,548 a year on monthly billing versus $1,290 on annual billing, a difference of $258.

What does the Ahrefs API cost per call?

The API has no separate price list. It is included with eligible paid plans, and each plan comes with a monthly allowance of API units. The pricing page lists “API integration units per month” of 200,000 on Lite, 800,000 on Standard, 2 million on Advanced and 4 million or custom on Enterprise, and caps the rows per direct API request at 100, 250, 500 and unlimited respectively. Third-party write-ups quote different allowances, so treat the account’s own “Limits & usage” page as the final word for your plan.

How units are counted is documented clearly. Ahrefs’ developer docs give the formula:

units per request = max(50, per-row cost × number of rows)

The per-row cost is the sum of each unique field you select, filter or sort by. Most fields cost 1 unit; some metrics cost 5 or 10. Requests served from cache cost nothing, and a short list of free test queries (targets such as ahrefs.com) lets you develop without spending units. Units, once consumed, are not refunded.

Two consequences matter for budgeting:

  1. Small requests are never cheaper than 50 units. Asking for a single domain rating still costs the base 50.
  2. Field choice can multiply the bill. A backlink pull with four 1-unit fields costs 4 units a row. Add one 10-unit traffic metric and the same pull costs 14 units a row, three and a half times as much.

What jobs can an Ahrefs AI agent take off your plate?

The jobs below are the ones where people most often pay for Ahrefs and then run out of time to act on what it shows.

1. Weekly link-profile check

Watch new and lost referring domains for your site, flag lost links from pages that still exist, and write a short note on which ones are worth asking back. The value is not the list; it is the follow-up email someone actually sends.

2. Fixing what Site Audit finds

Site Audit can return hundreds of issues. An agent can sort them by pages that get traffic, then open the CMS and fix the simple ones (missing meta descriptions, broken internal links, redirect chains in menus) and leave a list of the rest for a developer.

3. Content gap to brief

Pull the keywords competitors rank for and you do not, group them by intent, and turn the best group into an outline with the questions searchers ask. This is where a written brief saves a writer an afternoon.

4. Rank tracking with a reason attached

Rank Tracker updates weekly on every plan. An agent can read the movement, check whether the page changed, whether a competitor published something new or whether Search Console impressions moved too, and explain the drop in two sentences instead of a chart.

5. Link-building prospect lists

Find sites that link to two or more competitors but not to you, check each one is real and active, find a contact route and draft a personalised pitch for review. The approval step stays with you.

6. Client reporting for freelancers and agencies

Assemble the same numbers every week for every client, write a plain-language summary of what changed and what was done, and send it on time. This is repetitive, deadline-driven work and a good fit for a scheduled agent.

Turn your SEO data into finished work

Describe the job in one sentence, for example “every Monday, check lost backlinks and Site Audit errors for my site, fix the simple ones in WordPress and send me a short report”. Katteb writes the plan, then an agent runs it in a real browser and reports every day.

What does Katteb cost?

From katteb.com/pricing on 9 October 2026, in US dollars, before tax:

Katteb plan Monthly Annual Includes
Lite $19 / mo $190 / yr 1 agent working on your goal every day, week or month; 30 hours of agent time a week; unlimited chat, images and video; remembers what it did and reports every day; 1 user
Business (goals plan) $99 / mo $990 / yr 10 agents, each on its own goal; 120 hours of agent time a week; schedules every hour, day, week or month; up to 5 agents at once; 3 users
Enterprise From $1,000 / mo Custom Unlimited agents, white-label dashboard, dedicated onboarding

Katteb does not sell or resell Ahrefs data and does not replace an Ahrefs licence. Its agent works in the accounts you already have, including a free Ahrefs account, Google Search Console and your website, and does the follow-up work there.

Three cost scenarios, with every assumption stated

Assumptions for all three: US dollars; list prices read on 9 October 2026; pre-tax; one user; one month equals 4.33 weeks; staff time valued at $30 an hour where it matters; engineering, hosting and any content or outreach costs are excluded.

Scenario A: a small business that only needs its own site looked after

A business owner wants a monthly check of their own site: new and lost backlinks, technical issues, which pages slipped in Google, and the easy fixes done. They do not need to research competitors’ link profiles.

Option Monthly Annual
Ahrefs Lite, monthly billing $129 $1,548
Ahrefs Lite, annual billing $108 $1,290
Ahrefs Free + Search Console + Katteb Lite $0 + $0 + $19 = $19 $0 + $0 + $190 = $190

Result: for this job only, the free-tools-plus-agent route costs $110 a month less than Ahrefs Lite on monthly billing ($129 − $19), and $1,100 a year less against Lite on annual billing ($1,290 − $190). The trade-off is real: Ahrefs Free covers sites you verify, not competitors, and has fewer reports and less history. If the job is “keep my own site healthy and tell me what changed”, the lower figure holds. If you also need competitor research, it does not, and Scenario B is the honest comparison.

Scenario B: a freelance SEO who needs Standard anyway

A consultant manages eight client sites and needs competitor backlink data, Content Explorer and two years of history, so Ahrefs Standard is required regardless. The question is whether an agent on top is worth it.

Option Monthly Annual
Ahrefs Standard alone $249 $2,490 (annual billing)
Ahrefs Standard + Katteb Lite $249 + $19 = $268 $2,490 + $190 = $2,680

Result: here Katteb is an added cost of $19 a month (about 7.6% on top of Standard), not a saving. At $30 an hour it pays for itself if it saves more than 0.63 hours a month ($19 ÷ $30). Eight weekly client reports alone usually take longer than that by hand, but whether it is worth it depends on your own hours, so measure one month before deciding. If the consultant needed separate agents per client running in parallel, Katteb Business at $99 would bring the total to $348 a month.

Scenario C: a developer building a backlink pipeline on the API

A small SaaS team wants every Monday the top 500 backlinks for its own domain and nine competitors, with four 1-unit fields per row, loaded into a dashboard.

Step Calculation Result
Units per domain pull 500 rows × 4 units (above the 50 base) 2,000 units
Requests needed on Lite 500 rows ÷ 100 max rows per request 5 requests per domain
Units per week 10 domains × 2,000 20,000 units
Units per month 20,000 × 4.33 86,600 units
Same pull with one extra 10-unit traffic field 500 × 14 × 10 × 4.33 303,100 units

Result: the four-field version fits inside the 200,000 units the pricing page lists for Lite, so the data cost is the $129 subscription. Add a single 10-unit metric and the pull goes over that figure, which means pay-as-you-go units or a higher plan. In this scenario an agent is not a cheaper way to get the data: the API is the right tool for a fixed, repeating pull into your own system. Where Katteb can add value is downstream, reading the dashboard and doing the follow-up work, and that is an added cost of $19 to $99 a month to weigh against the hours it saves. We are not claiming it is cheaper here.

Which route for which job?

Your job Best fit Why
One-off research question Ahrefs web app or MCP in a chat assistant Fast answer, no code, no schedule needed
Fixed data pull into your own product or dashboard Ahrefs API Precise, cheap per row if you select only the fields you need
Recurring work that ends in an action (fix, email, report) Goal-driven agent such as Katteb, with Ahrefs or free tools The cost is in the doing, not in fetching the data
Own-site upkeep on a small budget Ahrefs Free + Search Console + an agent Covers own-site data without a paid licence
Large-scale competitor intelligence across hundreds of domains Ahrefs Advanced or Enterprise Row limits and unit allowances scale with the plan

When should you not use an Ahrefs AI agent?

  • When you need a licence to show the data. If you want to display Ahrefs metrics inside your own product for customers, that is an API and licensing question for Ahrefs, not an agent job.
  • When the job is a single question. Asking Ahrefs directly is quicker than setting up a goal.
  • When nobody will act on the output. An agent that sends a report nobody reads is just a more expensive report. Start with one outcome you care about.
  • When the change is risky. Redirect maps, site migrations and anything that touches revenue pages should stay with a person, with the agent preparing the list and you approving it.

How to set up an SEO agent that uses Ahrefs data

  1. Write the outcome, not the steps. “Recover lost backlinks from pages that still exist and send me a list every Monday” is better than “check Ahrefs”.
  2. Decide which accounts it may use. Your Ahrefs account (paid or free), Search Console, your CMS and an inbox for outreach drafts. Sign in once.
  3. Set the approval points. Let it fix meta descriptions on its own; make it ask before it sends any email or changes a URL.
  4. Choose the rhythm. Weekly suits rank and link checks; daily suits review of Site Audit errors on a busy site.
  5. Measure for four weeks. Count fixes made, links recovered and hours you did not spend, then compare that with the plan price.

Common mistakes when budgeting for Ahrefs

  • Comparing monthly with annual prices. Lite is $129 on monthly billing and $108 a month on annual billing. Compare like with like.
  • Forgetting extra seats. A three-person team on Standard is $249 + 2 × $60 = $369 a month.
  • Selecting every field in API calls. Each field adds to the per-row cost; pull only what the report uses.
  • Paying for data you never act on. If the reports pile up unread, the cheaper fix is a process (or an agent) that acts on them, not a bigger plan.

FAQ

How much does Ahrefs cost per month?

On 9 October 2026: $129 for Lite, $249 for Standard and $449 for Advanced on monthly billing, or $108, $208 and $374 a month when paid annually. Enterprise is $1,499 a month with an annual commitment. Starter is $29 a month, and Ahrefs Free costs nothing for sites you own.

Is the Ahrefs API included in Lite?

Yes. The pricing page lists API and MCP access on Lite, with a cap of 100 rows per direct API request. Higher plans raise the row cap and the unit allowance.

What is the minimum cost of an Ahrefs API request?

50 units, according to Ahrefs’ developer documentation. Larger requests cost the per-row field cost multiplied by the number of rows, whichever is higher.

Does Ahrefs offer a free trial or discounts?

Its pricing FAQ says it never runs discounts. Website owners can use Ahrefs Free for limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access to their own sites.

Is Katteb a replacement for Ahrefs?

No. Katteb does not provide Ahrefs data. It is an agent that works in your accounts and does the follow-up work. In Scenario A it lets a small business manage without a paid SEO tool; in Scenarios B and C it is an added cost to weigh against the hours it saves. You can try an agent on one SEO goal and measure that for yourself.

The bottom line

Ahrefs pricing is straightforward once you separate three questions: how much data you need, whether you need it through the API, and who will act on it. If you need competitor intelligence at scale, the plan price is the price, and an agent is an extra. If you mostly need your own site watched and fixed, a free tier plus an agent can cover the job for a fraction of a paid licence. Either way, write down the outcome first, then pick the cheapest route that reaches it, and start one agent on that outcome before you commit to a bigger plan.
