ElevenLabs AI Agent: ElevenLabs API Price per 1,000 Characters, Plan Math and Where a Content Agent Fits

ElevenLabs API price versus Creator plan and Creator plus Katteb Lite for 80,000 characters a month, with the Katteb logo

TL;DR. On 12 October 2026 the ElevenLabs API pricing page listed text to speech at a pay-as-you-go list price of $0.08 per 1,000 characters for v4, v3 and v2 Multilingual, and $0.04 per 1,000 for v4 Turbo, v3 Conversational and Flash/Turbo (v4 and v4 Turbo were on a 72% launch discount that ended that day). The ElevenLabs plans page listed Free $0 (10,000 credits a month), Starter $6 (30,000), Creator $22 (121,000), Pro $99 (600,000), Scale $299 (1.8M, 3 seats) and Business $990 (6M, 10 seats); yearly billing costs ten months’ price. The cheapest route depends on volume, on whether you need a commercial licence or voice cloning, and on whether anyone can call an API. Below, four scenarios with every figure in US dollars, pre-tax, and the arithmetic shown.

Someone searching “elevenlabs api price” is usually weighing two ways to pay the same company. One is a subscription with a monthly pool of credits that you spend in the ElevenLabs app. The other is the API, billed per 1,000 characters, where your own code, or a tool someone else built, sends the text and gets audio back. There is a third question hiding behind the first two: who writes the script, renders it, checks it and puts it into a video every week? That is the part an AI agent does, and it has its own price.

This guide takes the three in order. It sets out what ElevenLabs charges and how credits and characters are counted, lists the jobs an ElevenLabs AI agent is used for, and works through four priced scenarios. Where the official pages do not give enough to compare fairly, we say so rather than fill the gap.

What does ElevenLabs sell?

ElevenLabs is best known for text to speech, but its pricing page now groups three products: ElevenCreative (the app: text to speech, speech to text, sound effects, voice design, music, dubbing, image and video), ElevenAgents (real-time voice agents for phone and chat) and ElevenAPI (the same models priced per unit for developers). This article is about producing voice content, so it covers Creative plans and API prices. ElevenAgents, which bills conversational minutes, is a different purchase and is not compared here.

How credits and characters work

According to the plans page FAQ, each plan comes with a monthly pool of credits shared across every product. Text to speech costs about 1 credit per character on the v2 Multilingual model; Flash and Turbo models cost between 0.5 and 1 credit per character through the API. Other products draw from the same pool: speech to text about 330 credits a minute, music about 900 credits a minute, sound effects about 200 credits per generation, voice changer and isolator about 1,000 credits a minute, and dubbing from 2,000 to 10,000 credits a minute depending on the mode.

Unused credits on a paid plan roll over for up to two months, so a balance can reach three times the monthly quota while the subscription stays active. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits the unused paid credits at the end of the cycle, and the Free plan has no rollover. Pay-as-you-go top-ups are separate from that cap.

ElevenLabs plans, read from the official page

All figures read on 12 October 2026 from elevenlabs.io/pricing. Prices in US dollars, excluding taxes, levies and duties, as the page states.

Plan Monthly price Yearly price (10 × monthly) Credits per month Notable additions
Free $0 $0 10,000 3 Studio projects; no commercial licence listed
Starter $6 (first month $1 until 18 Oct) $60 ($5/month) 30,000 Commercial licence, instant voice cloning, Dubbing Studio
Creator $22 (first month $11) $220 ($18.33/month) 121,000 Professional voice cloning, additional credits
Pro $99 $990 ($82.50/month) 600,000 44.1 kHz PCM output via API, 192 kbps audio
Scale $299 $2,990 ($249.17/month) 1,800,000 3 seats, team collaboration, 3 professional clones
Business $990 $9,900 ($825/month) 6,000,000 10 seats, 10 professional clones, low-latency TTS
Enterprise Custom Custom Custom DPA/SLA terms, SSO, HIPAA BAAs

The plans page also lists approximate extra-minute prices for text to speech in the app, falling from about $0.36 on Free to about $0.17 on Pro and above, and concurrency limits rising from 2 requests on Free to 25 on Business.

ElevenLabs API price per 1,000 characters

The API pricing page prices each model directly. List prices, read 12 October 2026:

Model Price per 1,000 characters (list) Positioning on the page
v4 $0.08 ($0.022 during a launch discount ending 12 Oct) Most emotive, audio tags, 90+ languages
v4 Turbo $0.04 ($0.011 during the same discount) Real-time and agents, about 100 ms latency
v3 $0.08 Expressive delivery, multi-speaker dialogue, 5,000 character limit per request
v3 Conversational $0.04 About 280 ms latency, tuned for conversation
v2 Multilingual $0.08 Stable long-form audio, 29 languages, 10,000 character limit
Flash / Turbo $0.04 About 75 ms latency, 32 languages, 40,000 character limit

Other API prices on the same page: Scribe v2 speech to text $0.22 an hour (Realtime $0.39), Music $0.15 a minute, Voice Isolator, Voice Changer and Sound Effects $0.12 a minute, Dubbing v1 $0.33 and Dubbing v2 $2.20 a minute.

One detail worth flagging: the API page’s plan table shows “characters included” per plan, and those figures equal the plan price divided by the per-character rate (for example Creator $22 ÷ $0.08 per 1,000 = 275,000 v3 characters). The plans page describes the same Creator plan as 121,000 credits. The two pages count in different units, so before you budget a large job, check the balance your own dashboard shows for the model you will actually use. In the scenarios below we use the plans page credits for app use and the per-1,000 rate for API use, and never mix them.

What does an ElevenLabs AI agent actually do?

ElevenLabs renders the voice. The agent does everything around the render, which is where most of the hours go:

  1. Weekly explainer or product videos. Draft a 60 to 90 second script from a changelog or a blog post, render it, and lay it under screenshots.
  2. Podcast and YouTube narration. Turn an outline into a full narration script, render it in chapters, check the pronunciation of names, and re-render the lines that fail.
  3. Multilingual versions. Translate one script into several languages and render each one, keeping a log of which voice and model produced which file.
  4. Course and training audio. Convert lesson text into narration for every module, with consistent voice settings.
  5. Social clips. Cut a long article into ten short hooks and render each as a voice-over for a reel.
  6. Transcripts and captions. Use speech to text on recorded calls or videos and turn them into show notes or caption files.

A render takes seconds. The script, the review and the publishing take hours. That is the honest boundary between paying ElevenLabs and paying for an agent.

Subscription, API or an agent: four priced scenarios

Assumptions for every scenario: US dollars; one month unless stated; list prices read on 12 October 2026 (launch discounts ignored, because they expire); taxes excluded; roughly 1,000 characters equal one minute of speech, the ratio the ElevenLabs API page itself uses (“10,000 ~10 min”); staff time valued at $30 an hour; engineering time for an API integration not included. Katteb figures from the Katteb pricing page: Lite $19 a month or $190 a year with 30 hours of agent time a week; Business $99 a month or $990 a year. Katteb does not replace ElevenLabs: it works in your ElevenLabs account through the browser, signed in once, so in every Katteb row the ElevenLabs plan is still paid.

Scenario A: a small business, eight short voice-overs a month

Eight explainers of about 1,500 characters each: 8 × 1,500 = 12,000 characters a month, used commercially. The Free plan’s 10,000 credits are not enough and the commercial licence starts at Starter, so the app route is Starter at $6 (30,000 credits covers 12,000 characters at 1 credit each). By API at the v3 list rate the characters cost 12 × $0.08 = $0.96, or $0.48 on Flash; the plans page does not say whether pay-as-you-go use carries the same commercial licence, so check that before choosing it.

Adding Katteb Lite: $6 + $19 = $25 a month against $6 alone, so Katteb is $19 more. It pays for itself only if it saves more than $19 ÷ $30 = 0.63 hours, about 38 minutes, of scripting and editing a month. For eight videos that is under five minutes each, but it is still a cost, not a saving, and we label it that way.

Scenario B: a weekly podcast or YouTube narration

Four episodes of 20 minutes: 4 × 20 = 80 minutes, about 80,000 characters a month.

  • App route: Starter’s 30,000 credits are not enough; Creator at $22 (121,000 credits) covers it with room for retakes. Creator is also the first plan with professional voice cloning, which many narrators want.
  • API route: 80 × $0.08 = $6.40 on v3 or v2 Multilingual, or 80 × $0.04 = $3.20 on Flash. Against Creator that is $22 − $6.40 = $15.60 less a month, but only if you have code (or a tool) that calls the API and you do not need a professional voice clone.
  • With an agent: Creator $22 + Katteb Lite $19 = $41, which is $19 more than Creator alone. Break-even is again 38 minutes a month. Four scripts of 20 minutes each usually take several hours to write and check, which is where the agent’s time goes.
Scenario Volume per month ElevenLabs only (USD/month) With Katteb Lite (USD/month) Difference
A. Eight explainers 12,000 characters $6 Starter (API $0.96 at v3 rate) $25 Katteb $19 more; break-even 38 min
B. Weekly narration 80,000 characters $22 Creator (API $6.40 at v3 rate) $41 Katteb $19 more; API is $15.60 below Creator
C. In-app voice 5,000,000 characters (Flash) $200 API or $299 Scale Not comparable Application traffic needs the API
D. Yearly billing Creator for 12 months $220 yearly vs $264 monthly Lite $190 yearly vs $228 monthly $44 and $38 less a year on yearly billing

Scenario C: voice inside a product

An app reads out 5,000,000 characters of notifications a month on the Flash model. API at list price: 5,000 × $0.04 = $200 a month. The Scale plan costs $299 and adds 3 seats, team collaboration and higher concurrency (15 on the plans page versus 10 on Pro). On price alone pay-as-you-go is $99 a month less than Scale, provided the concurrency it allows is enough for your traffic, which the page does not state for pay-as-you-go. We do not put Katteb in this row: an agent is not a voice engine for thousands of app users, and a price next to $200 would be misleading.

Scenario D: monthly or yearly billing

ElevenLabs charges ten months for a year. Creator for twelve months costs 12 × $22 = $264 monthly or $220 yearly, so yearly is $44 less a year. On Pro the gap is 12 × $99 = $1,188 against $990, $198 less a year. Katteb Lite works the same way: 12 × $19 = $228 against $190 yearly, $38 less a year. Yearly billing only helps if you will still be producing audio in month twelve; the rollover rule means unused credits are lost if you downgrade.

When the ElevenLabs API is the better buy

  • Your volume is spiky. Pay per 1,000 characters when one month needs 5,000 characters and the next 500,000.
  • You are building a product. Notifications, read-aloud features and in-app narration are API work.
  • You have code already. At the v3 list rate, 80,000 characters cost $6.40 by API against a $22 Creator plan.
  • You want the cheaper model per job. The Flash and Turbo models cost half of v3 per character; for notification audio or drafts that is often enough.

When a subscription plus an agent is the better buy

  • You need professional voice cloning. It starts at Creator on the plans page.
  • The bottleneck is the script, not the render. An agent that drafts, checks names, re-renders failed lines and files the audio saves the hours that the render price does not show.
  • Nobody wants to maintain an integration. An agent works in the app the way a person would, so there is no code to keep alive when the API changes.
  • The job crosses tools. Script from a blog, audio from ElevenLabs, video from another editor and a post on social media is a workflow, not an API call.

How to set it up

  1. Measure your characters. Count the characters in last month’s scripts. That number picks the plan, not the marketing name.
  2. Pick the model per job. v3 or v2 Multilingual for narration people listen to closely, Flash for drafts and system audio.
  3. Fix the voice settings once. Same voice, same stability settings, written down, so every episode sounds the same.
  4. Write the agent’s instruction with an output. “Every Thursday, turn this week’s blog post into a 90-second script, render it with our voice and send me the MP3 and the script” is a job an agent can finish.
  5. Download every file the day it is made. Store audio in your own drive; do not rely on a link.

Common mistakes with ElevenLabs pricing

  • Budgeting on a launch discount. The v4 price shown on 12 October 2026 ($0.022 per 1,000) was a 72% discount ending that day; the list price is $0.08.
  • Forgetting that every product shares the credit pool. Music and dubbing eat the same credits as narration.
  • Using the free plan commercially. The commercial licence appears from Starter upward.
  • Mixing credits and API characters. The two pages count differently; check the dashboard for the model you use.
  • Cancelling with a large balance. Unused paid credits expire at the end of the cycle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ElevenLabs API price per 1,000 characters?

At list price on 12 October 2026: $0.08 for v4, v3 and v2 Multilingual, and $0.04 for v4 Turbo, v3 Conversational and Flash/Turbo.

How much is ElevenLabs a month?

Free $0, Starter $6, Creator $22, Pro $99, Scale $299 and Business $990 a month; Enterprise is custom. Yearly billing costs ten times the monthly price.

Is the ElevenLabs API cheaper than a subscription?

For text to speech alone, often yes: 80,000 characters cost $6.40 at the v3 list rate against $22 for Creator. The subscription wins when you need its features (professional cloning, seats, Studio) or when nobody can call an API.

Do unused ElevenLabs credits roll over?

On paid plans, for up to two months, up to twice the monthly quota, while the subscription stays active. Not on Free.

Does Katteb replace ElevenLabs?

No. Katteb is the agent that writes, renders in your ElevenLabs account and delivers the files. You still pay ElevenLabs. In our scenarios Katteb Lite adds $19 a month and pays for itself only if it saves more than about 38 minutes of work. Try it on one weekly job and measure.
